Final vector - BYU-I Bridal

My last project I wanted to do something realistic.  I really like the way light plays through diamonds so I decided I wanted to create a diamond ring ad.

I went through sketches of how I wanted the ring to be displayed.  And looked up some looks of what I wanted my ring to look like.  This is what I came up with when it all came together.

T-Shirt Illustration

The past two weeks my class has been working on coming up with our own illustrations.  We had the option of creating a t-shirt design or a poster.  I chose to create an illustration for a t-shirt and so I started sketching.

I decided to pick one of my sketches that involved a kite.  I ended up making an illustration with a penguin that was flying away on a kite.  Who has a better reason to be happy about flying than a penguin after all?  I got feedback from some design friends and made some adjustments.  At first, I thought having no eyes on the penguin would make it seem less childish and more hipster.

After more consideration (and feedback) I decided that it was a little too weird not to have eyes on it so I added eyes in a style that I thought would tie into the picture.  This is my final for my t-shirt design!

Icons

This week's project was on creating an icon set.  We were given total creative freedom on this one so it makes the project both difficult and fun!  When I first heard the word icon I immediately thought of social media icons.  This, however, is a creative cap, so I needed to pick a concept and go with that.  I sketched a bit about a few themes and then settled on a Christmas theme since the first snow of the season had arrived.  Funny, I wasn't the only one who picked that topic!

Here are my basic sketches to get some ideas out.  We were able to look at references of good icons on a pinterest board that was linked to our class website.

We were asked to create six logos in black and white first.  These, I will admit, are pretty sloppy and not looking to great.  Lots of work to be done on the forms.  I had an idea in mind so at least it helped me get a place to start from.

The final icons are a lot better!  I wanted to use more negative space and to play with the forms.  They look way more cohesive.

Typographic poster

This project is the typographic poster for my vector class.  We were asked to create a poster using typographic elements by manipulating and distorting words.  Examples were shown in class and, with a few tips from our teacher, we were let loose on the project.

I wanted to do something fun for my poster so I sketched some quotes and fun little things.  I ended up going for a quote from BBC's Doctor Who series that was a lot of fun to work with. 

I came up with a quick digital draft that I really liked.  I used Impact, a thick slab font, paired with a thin sanserif typeface called Arsenal.  The contrast puts emphasis on the more important words.  I also squished the middle letters of the word pears to put the "let me eat" part into a bit of a cool position.

I wanted to try putting the words in a pair shape, but I found the attempts to be quite difficult and I didn't have a lot of time for it.  These are some of my simpler digital drafts.

I ended up staying with my original draft with a few alignment and spacing tweaks, as suggested by my teacher, to put on the finishing touches.

Bike

 This is the bike vector project that we were asked to make.  My first draft is up on top.  My finished version is on the bottom.  I had a lot of fixing to do,  including getting the bike to look like an actual bike!

Vector Watch

This is my first vector project where I was asked to create a piece that had to do with time.  The vector image can look anywhere from realistic to a more generalized look and the entire project had to be completed in Illustrator.

While starting the process to create my timepiece, I started with a bit of research and sketching.

The point of sketching was to get any ideas onto paper and do some thinking.  I chose to do my time piece as a watch.  In the sketches, I tried to figure out the shape of the face and to go digital or analog.

My first draft, I wanted to go with a Harry Potter theme with the deathly hallows, but the concept wasn't working the way I wanted it to and the color scheme wasn't going as well as I thought either.  I wanted to go with a more realistic look so I needed to make a few changes. . . more like a lot of changes.

After doing some more visual research and learning a few more tricks from my teacher and some fellow designers, I was able to change the look of my watch to a more realistic time piece with dimension and lighting details.

  This watch meets the project requirements in that it was completed in Illustrator and has been formed to look like a realistic watch.  It has lighting and blending modes that make it look this way and completes the project.  Mission accomplished!
